IT club

IT-club is a social gathering (with official blessing) of employees of the math department to discuss the best ways to face the changes brought to us by information technology. We will meet for 30 minutes at the end of the working week to hold discussions on topics of common interest (other than scientific computing).

Next meeting: September 20, 15:15 Location: Å7:4118

Theme: Connectivity
  • How to have my files accessible from any computer/device on any network?
  • Eduroam: where it works (even if not expected) and where it doesn't (even if should).
  • Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.net) versus ssh/sftp/rsync to a server.
  • Mail alternatives: browser mail - to use or not to use, mail clients - from Pine and Thunderbird to Claws, Sylfeed and K-9.
  • Teleconferencing: Skype, Google, Adobe Connect, SIP accounts.
  • MathSciNet and journal subscriptions off-campus: VPN, Thinlinc and http-proxy methods.
  • When WiFi is down: how to use the WiFi link to 3G via a smartphone.

Other topics for future discussions:
  • Can one do decent work on Android devices? Are there TeX compilers for Android?
  • Writing exams and Beamer PDFs in miunutes: LyX frontend for TeX is a real time-saver.
  • Android tablet +  EzPDF + projector = virtual inkboard.
  • Making a slow laptop a fast one by installing second OS. Android-x86, light-weight Ubuntu and Bodhi Linux, Guided installation of the second OS on a laptop.
  • SoC: matchbox-size desktops with Ubunutu? Is this possible?  (http://www.solid-run.com/cubox and http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/linux_mini_pcs.html). Is Intel joining the bandwagon?
